WHEREAS, women have been an integral part of Virginia's history since their earliest days as Native American wives, mothers, and frontier settlers; and
WHEREAS, far too often, women have been relegated to the role of supporting cast in descriptions of the great moments of Virginia and American history and their notable contributions are not widely known; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Foundation for Women works to promote the welfare of women and girls through education, collaboration, outreach, and leadership; and
WHEREAS, in celebration of Women's History Month, the Virginia Foundation for Women honors eight Virginia women for their accomplishments and contributions; and
WHEREAS, the eight honorees often share qualifications, including seeing things differently from their contemporaries, developing new ideas about old problems, speaking and acting based on strong convictions, and initiating changes in Virginia and America that continue to affect our lives; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate March, in 2004 and in each succeeding year, as Women in History Month in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the Virginia Foundation for Women so that members of the foundation may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this month on the General Assembly's website.
