HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 283
Commending the York County School of Arts.

WHEREAS, the York County public schools created the School of Arts at Bruton High School in 1989 to promote the diverse and high-quality humanities education offered by the York County public schools; and

WHEREAS, because of its overwhelmingly successful performances, the York County School of Arts was invited in August 2001 to participate in the Scottish Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, the world's oldest theatre festival; and

WHEREAS, the York County School of Arts was one of a few select American schools to be invited to participate in the 2003 Scottish Fringe Festival; and

WHEREAS, the York County student performers secured funds in excess of $50,000 for production costs, royalties, venue expenses, and other costs associated with participation in the Festival; and

WHEREAS, at the 2003 Scottish Fringe Festival, the York County School of Arts presented four performances of My Fair Lady for international audiences; and

WHEREAS, the performances of My Fair Lady by the York County School of Arts marked the first time a high school troupe ever performed to sold-out audiences for every performance at the Scottish Fringe Festival; and

WHEREAS, the international recognition received by the York County School of Arts at the Scottish Fringe Festival was possible because of the support of the York County School Board, Superintendent Steven Staples, Theatre Director Sonya Fischer, and Technical Director Michelle Abrams and the extraordinary talent of students from York County's four high schools; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the York County School of Arts for representing York County and the Commonwealth with exceptional success at the 2003 Scottish Fringe Festival; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the York County School of Arts as an expression of the congratulations and best wishes of the General Assembly.
