2004 SESSION
044657532WHEREAS, the Albemarle Housing Improvement Program (AHIP) is a nonprofit housing and community development organization dedicated to helping low-income residents of Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville live in safe, decent, and affordable housing; and
WHEREAS, AHIP pursues its mission of assisting low-income families in acquiring or maintaining a home in cooperation with other local agencies, such as the Albemarle County Office of Housing and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville; and
WHEREAS, AHIP and its partners undertook the task of revitalizing the Porter/Yancey neighborhood in the southern Albemarle community of Esmont, an area that had suffered significant deterioration; and
WHEREAS, by rehabilitating 31 homes and building five new ones, AHIP played a major role in the renovation of Porter/Yancey, which also benefited from a new county park, new recreational facilities, and a new subdivision constructed by Habitat for Humanity; and
WHEREAS, the families who live in the Porter/Yancey neighborhood now enjoy improved housing and recreational facilities, and a safe environment because of the presence of a new substation of the Albemarle County Police; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of its outstanding efforts in the Porter/Yancey Neighborhood Revitalization Project, AHIP and its partners accepted the Virginia Housing Award for the Best Housing Development in 2003; and
WHEREAS, the Best Housing Development Award cited AHIP's role in creating a "housing development that is innovative in its concept and design and exceptional in meeting the needs of the targeted client population"; now, therefore, be it
