HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 264
On the death of Nancy F. Sprague.

WHEREAS, Nancy F. Sprague of Falls Church, an influential and widely respected teacher and public school administrator in Falls Church and Fairfax County, died on November 1, 2003; and

WHEREAS, a native of Washington, D.C., Nancy Sprague graduated from the University of Michigan, where she earned her master's degree in public administration and her doctorate in social science education; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Sprague began her career in Falls Church in 1970 as a teacher of psychology and social science at George Mason Junior-Senior High School; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Sprague later served as principal of the junior high school, and by 1989, she held three positions simultaneously: assistant to the superintendent for business and finance, director of instruction, and clerk of the School Board; and

WHEREAS, for the past 13 years, Nancy Sprague held administrative positions in the Fairfax County public schools and was serving as the school system's chief academic officer and chief deputy to the superintendent at the time of her death; and

WHEREAS, as assistant superintendent for instructional services, Nancy Sprague supervised programs to teach English as a second language, the adult alternative high schools, the International Baccalaureate program, high school professional academies, and the summer school program; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her skills and her widespread impact on public education, Nancy Sprague was honored as the first recipient from Falls Church of the Washington Post Distinguished Educational Leadership Award; and

WHEREAS, a skilled and inspirational teacher, an articulate and effective advocate for public education, and a mentor to numerous Northern Virginia teachers and public school administrators, Nancy Sprague leaves a matchless and enduring legacy of service to public education in Falls Church and Fairfax County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an exceptionally talented and dedicated educator, Nancy F. Sprague; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Nancy F. Sprague as an expression of the esteem in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
