HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 256
Celebrating the life of Lieutenant Joshua Charles Hurley.

WHEREAS, United States Army Lieutenant Joshua Charles Hurley, a resident of Clifton Forge and a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, was killed in action in Iraq on November 1, 2003; and

WHEREAS, Joshua Charles Hurley graduated with distinction from VMI in 2001 with a degree in mechanical engineering, was selected as a Distinguished Military Graduate, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers; and

WHEREAS, as a cadet at VMI, Joshua Charles Hurley participated in numerous intramural sports, played on the varsity golf team, was active with the Cadet Program Board, and achieved Dean's Academic Honor List status for six consecutive semesters; and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Hurley was deployed to Iraq with his wife, United States Army Lieutenant Teresa Vaught Hurley; and

WHEREAS, serving with the 326th Engineer Battalion, 101st Airborne Division west of Baghdad, Lieutenant Hurley was in a vehicle destroyed by a roadside bomb detonated by an unknown terrorist; and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Hurley's death is a reminder of the hazards faced daily by the thousands of young Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Lieutenant Joshua Charles Hurley; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant Joshua Charles Hurley as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
