2004 SESSION
WHEREAS, the County of New Kent was established 350 years ago by the severance of territory from the County of York; and
WHEREAS, this favored land is bounded by the Counties of Hanover and James City and by the Pamunkey, York, and Chickahominy Rivers, the last of which was explored into New Kent County by the redoubtable Captain John Smith; and
WHEREAS, at her home on the banks of the Pamunkey in New Kent County, George Washington met and was betrothed to Martha Custis; and
WHEREAS, one of the earliest colonial settlements on the peninsula was at Providence Forge in New Kent County; and
WHEREAS, fierce battles of the Revolution and the War Between the States devastated the beautiful countryside of New Kent County; and
WHEREAS, New Kent County is the birthplace and final resting place of Letitia Christian Tyler, wife of President John Tyler; and
WHEREAS, New Kent County and the George W. Watkins School are associated with the significant decision of Charles C. Green et al. v. County School Board of New Kent County, Virginia, et al., in which the Supreme Court defined public school desegregation standards, and they stand as a symbol of the efforts of the modern civil rights movement to expand the rights of African-American citizens in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the addition of Colonial Downs to New Kent County has opened new opportunities for tourism and for involvement with the state and national equine and horse racing industry; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of New Kent County continue to enhance the legacy of their forebears to preserve the rural community and its natural resources of forests, rivers, and small villages; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commemorate New Kent County’s 350th anniversary and acknowledge its contributions to the glorious history of this Commonwealth and nation; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly join New Kent County in looking forward to the future with excitement and expectation as it remembers the accomplishments of the past with a renewed commitment to working together to build a bright and successful future; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors of the County of New Kent as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes.
