HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 219 Offered January 14, 2004 Prefiled January 14, 2004 Commending the Westfield High School football team. ---------- Patrons-- Reese and Hugo ----------

WHEREAS, on a cold December day at the University of Richmond, the Bulldogs from Westfield High School in Fairfax County accomplished what no Westfield football team had done before; and

WHEREAS, the Westfield High School football team won the 2003 Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division 6 state championship; and

WHEREAS, the first team in any sport in school history to win a state title, the Westfield Bulldogs put the crowning touch on a perfect season by defeating previously unbeaten Landstown High School, 35–14, in the state championship game; and

WHEREAS, with a perfect season record of 14–0, the Westfield Bulldogs were highly regarded from the beginning of the season and lived up to expectations by prevailing in the Concorde District, one of the most competitive districts in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, a versatile, opportunistic offense and a fast, determined defense characterized Coach Tom Verbanic's Bulldogs who enjoyed the support of the Chantilly community in building their perfect season; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Westfield Bulldogs is a tribute to the leadership of Head Coach Tom Verbanic and his staff; the talent, perseverance, and teamwork of the athletes; and the sustained and enthusiastic support of the students, faculty, and supporters of Westfield High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the 2003 Westfield High School Bulldogs on their first state championship season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Tom Verbanic in honor of the exceptional and unprecedented performance of the 2003 Westfield High School football team.
