Celebrating the life of Dr. Samuel K. Moak.

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel K. Moak, native of Korea and adopted son of Virginia, emigrated to the United States in 1954 after serving six years as a member of the Republic of Korea Army; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel K. Moak was called from labor to reward on June 3, 2003; and

WHEREAS, after serving the United States with distinction in the Korean War and spending two years as an instructor of military science at Fort Benning, Georgia, Dr. Moak earned his undergraduate degree from Colorado State University, master's degree from the University of Kentucky, and doctorate from North Carolina State University; and

WHEREAS, despite battling a life-threatening disease in which the prognosis was approximately 12 years, Dr. Moak lived 35 years, assumed leadership positions in the Presbyterian Church and the Korean community in Richmond, and was elevated to Moderator of the Atlantic Korean-American Presbytery, a governing body of Korean churches in the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. Synod of the Atlantic, the first Asian to occupy this position; and

WHEREAS, in 1971 Dr. Moak was ordained an elder in the Presbyterian Church and founded the Richmond Korean Presbyterian Church; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Moak devoted a considerable portion of his life to education, teaching at the University of Richmond for seven years, and later served on the faculty of Virginia State University where he became chairman of the Department of Management and Marketing; and

WHEREAS, as a director of Richmond's Korean-American Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Moak advised mayors and a Governor regarding trade agreements with Korea and Japan and assisted them on separate trade missions to these countries; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Moak was devoted to his family and guided other Koreans to assume leadership in the many organizations that he served; and

WHEREAS, parishioners, colleagues, and students remember Dr. Samuel K. Moak for his humor, kindness, and efforts to understand other cultures; and

WHEREAS, his integrity, faith, scholarship, spirit of community service, and willingness to help others endeared Dr. Moak to all who knew him; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Dr. Samuel K. Moak, professor, mentor, community leader, man of strong faith, and beloved father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Samuel K. Moak as an expression of the esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
