044633376WHEREAS, Edward G. Menaker of Waynesboro, a prominent political leader and tireless community volunteer for nearly 50 years, died on February 24, 2003; and
WHEREAS, following service with the famed Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force in China during World War II, which earned him a Bronze Star and two Presidential Unit Citations, Edward Menaker moved to Waynesboro, where he raised his family and contributed in numerous ways to the city and the region; and
WHEREAS, known locally as "Mr. Democrat," Edward Menaker was a former chairman of the Waynesboro Democratic Committee and a member of the Virginia State Democratic Committee; and
WHEREAS, less well known were Edward Menaker's volunteer public service activities, which were widespread and sustained over many years; and
WHEREAS, for more than 40 years, Edward Menaker held leadership positions in the Boy Scouts of America and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award from the Stonewall Jackson Area Council; and
WHEREAS, Edward Menaker served as president of the Northwestern Virginia Health Systems Agency, chairman of the Valley Health Council, and member of Virginia's Statewide Health Coordinating Council; and
WHEREAS, Edward Menaker was a member of the Waynesboro Library Board and chairman of the Building Committee, which built the present library on Wayne Avenue; and
WHEREAS, other local organizations served by Edward Menaker included the Waynesboro Association of Parent-Teacher Associations, the Waynesboro Parks and Recreation Commission, Coordinated Area Transportation Services, Inc., and the Valley Alliance for Education; and
WHEREAS, Edward Menaker leaves an enviable legacy of service to his community, the Commonwealth, and the nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of an exceptional Virginian, Edward G. Menaker; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Edward G. Menaker as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
