Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 22.1-5.1 as follows:

§ 22.1-5.1. Observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.

Effective on and after July 1, 2004, the public schools of the Commonwealth shall be closed for instructional and administrative purposes on the third Monday in January of each year in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.
