042298488Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding in Article 10 of Chapter 10 of Title 46.2 a section numbered 46.2-1088.4 as follows:
§ 46.2-1088.4. Reflectors or reflective material required on rear of certain trailers.
There shall be affixed to the rear end of every utility trailer either two or more reflectors of a type approved by the Superintendent or at least 100 square inches of solid reflectorized material. [ The reflectors or reflective material shall be applied so as to outline the end of the trailer. ] For the purposes of this section, "utility trailer" shall mean a trailer whose body and tailgate consist largely or exclusively of a metal mesh and whose end extends 18 inches or more beyond its taillights.
2. That the provisions of this act shall expire on July 1, [ 2005 2007 ] .
3. That the Virginia Transportation Research Council shall conduct a study to
determine whether the provisions of this act have contributed to highway safety
by reducing the frequency with which utility trailers, as defined in this act,
are struck from behind by other vehicles. The Council shall report its
findings to the Governor and the General Assembly prior to the convening of the
[ 2005 2007 ] Session of the General Assembly.
