040967556Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 18.2-178 of the Code of Virginia is amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 18.2-178. Obtaining money or signature, etc., by false pretense.
If any person obtain obtains, by any false pretense or token, or by use of a
false discount coupon, from any person, with intent to defraud, money, a gift
certificate or other property that may be the subject of larceny, he shall be deemed
guilty of larceny thereof; or if he obtain obtains, by any false pretense or
token, with such intent, the signature of any person to a writing, the false making whereof would be
forgery, he shall be guilty of a Class 4 felony.
"False discount coupon" means a forged or fake writing that purports to entitle the holder to a discount or rebate on merchandise or services.
2. That the provisions of this act may result in a net increase in periods of imprisonment or commitment. Pursuant to § 30-19.1:4, the estimated amount of the necessary appropriation is $0 for periods of imprisonment in state adult correctional facilities and is $0 for periods of commitment to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
