2003 SESSION
HB 2806 Four-day school week.
Introduced by: Christopher B. Saxman | all patrons ... notes | add to my profiles
SUMMARY AS PASSED: (all summaries)
Four-day school week. Provides that local school boards may approve, pursuant to guidelines developed by the Board of Education, school-proposed alternative school schedule plans, including those providing for the operation of schools on a four-day weekly calendar, so long as a minimum of 990 hours of instructional time is provided for grades one through 12 and 540 hours for kindergarten. No alternative plan that reduces the instructional time in the core academics shall be approved.
The Standards of Accreditation (SOA) (8 VAC 20-131-150) set the standard school year at 180 days, with the standard school day for students in grades one through 12 to "average at least 5-1/2 hours, excluding breaks for meals, and a minimum of three hours for kindergarten." The SOA permit school divisions to develop alternative schedules for meeting these requirements as long as a minimum of 990 hours of instructional time is provided for grades one through 12 and 540 hours for kindergarten. Such alternative plans must be approved by the local school board and by the Board of Education under guidelines established by it.
