WHEREAS, Irvine Byrd Hill of Norfolk, celebrated interviewer, community enthusiast, and longtime champion of Hampton Roads, will retire as vice-president of public affairs and community programming for Cox Communications; and

WHEREAS, in his prestigious career and tireless charitable deeds, Irvine Hill epitomizes ardent dedication, principle, and professionalism; and

WHEREAS, Irvine Hill was president and general manager of WCMS and WCMS-FM for 16 years, and in an effort to enhance the quality of radio, he began Irvine B. Hill Incorporated, a consulting firm to stations in Hampton Roads and Petersburg; and

WHEREAS, a conscientious leader, Irvine Hill served on the Norfolk City Council and was the City of Norfolk’s populist mayor from 1974 to 1976; and

WHEREAS, in 1983, Irvine Hill joined Cox Communications and soon thereafter became the stellar host of Hampton Roads Speaks Out on WCOX, Channel 11; and

WHEREAS, with dignity and gentle countenance, Irvine Hill interviewed more than 15,000 people and hosted more than 5,000 shows for WCOX, including Portraits, A Visit With, and Viewpoints; and

WHEREAS, during his long career, Irvine Hill served his beloved Hampton Roads as a board member of a community home for unwed mothers, president of the Kiwanis Club, vice-chairman of the Chrysler Museum Library, manager of the American Heart Association Fund, and commissioner of the Virginia and Maryland Chesapeake Bay Commission; and

WHEREAS, a tireless and spirited worker, Irvine Hill shared his many gifts and talents, contributing countless volunteer hours to charitable efforts; and

WHEREAS, by always illuminating Hampton Road’s humanity, strength, and greatness, Irvine Hill has had a profound impact on the community, touching thousands of lives and inspiring the leaders and citizens of Hampton Roads; now therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Irvine Byrd Hill on his outstanding career and service to the City of Norfolk, the Hampton Roads community, and the Commonwealth; and be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Irvine Byrd Hill as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for his many achievements and best wishes for continued success and happiness in retirement.
