HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 58
Commending Richard Nicholas Melito for designing the symbol of remembrance of September 11, 2001.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 21, 2003

WHEREAS, September 11, 2001, has joined December 7, 1941, and November 22, 1963, among the most significant and infamous dates in recent American history; and

WHEREAS, to commemorate and memorialize the victims, heroes, and tragic events of September 11, 2001, a Virginian has created a moving and appropriate symbol; and

WHEREAS, Richard Nicholas Melito, a Virginia resident, created a Freedom Flag, hand-sewn by a Virginia resident and flag maker on October 25, 2001, and unveiled on December 16, 2001; and

WHEREAS, The Virginia Historical Society adopted the Freedom Flag on November 12, 2001, for inclusion in a memorial exhibit on the September 11th attack on the Pentagon in the fall of 2002; and

WHEREAS, Richard Melito has established a nonprofit charitable organization, the Freedom Flag Foundation, to facilitate the distribution of Freedom Flags, to help educate children about September 11th, and to foster the establishment of a national symbol of remembrance; and

WHEREAS, the design of the Freedom Flag is an appropriate symbol to memorialize the victims of the attack and the courageous and ongoing response of all Americans to threats against our freedom; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby commend Richard Nicholas Melito for designing the Freedom Flag and support efforts to establish the Freedom Flag as the national symbol of remembrance of September 11, 2001; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Richard Nicholas Melito as an expression of the admiration and gratitude of the House of Delegates.
