On the death of Dr. Douglas F. Watson, Sr.

WHEREAS, Dr. Douglas F. "Duke" Watson, Sr., of Blacksburg, a retired veterinarian and professor at Virginia Tech, died on February 11, 2003; and

WHEREAS, a native of Oregon, Douglas Watson earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and his doctorate in veterinary medicine at the Veterinary School of the University of Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Watson was a veteran of service in the United States Army during World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Watson practiced veterinary medicine in Peru until 1955, when he returned to the United States and joined the faculty at Virginia Tech; and

WHEREAS, a professor at Virginia Tech until his retirement in 1979, Dr. Watson was instrumental in bringing the Veterinary College to Virginia Tech; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his contributions, the Douglas F. "Duke" Watson Heritage Room at the Veterinary College at Virginia Tech is named in his honor; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Watson was an active and devoted member of the Blacksburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he taught Sunday school for 43 years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Watson will be sorely missed by his large and loving family and by his numerous friends and admirers in the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a fine Virginian, Dr. Douglas F. Watson, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Douglas F. Watson, Sr., as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
