2003 SESSION
WHEREAS, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., sponsors the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy; and
WHEREAS, despite recent declines in teen pregnancy, the United States still has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy among industrialized nations; and
WHEREAS, the first National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy in 2002 was a resounding success, with more than 75,000 teenagers participating by taking an interactive, online quiz designed to present them with "real life" choices; and
WHEREAS, for the 2002 National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, activities took place in 47 states, the governors of seven states issued supporting proclamations, and resolutions in support were introduced in the United States Congress; and
WHEREAS, the second annual National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, scheduled for May 7, 2003, has won the support of more than 80 National Day partners; and
WHEREAS, among the prominent organizations supporting the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy are media companies, such as Fox Broadcasting and the New York Times; major corporations, such as Proctor & Gamble and Ogilvy & Mather; national professional associations, such as the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics; education leaders, such as the National Education Association and the American School Health Association; and governmental organizations, such as the National League of Cities and the National Conference of State Legislatures; and
WHEREAS, the help of these and other partners, combined with the support of popular teen-oriented websites, should assure even greater success for the 2003 National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly express its support of National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to Isabel V. Sawhill, president of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, so that she may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter.
