HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 527
Commending the Augusta Medical Center.

WHEREAS, for the third consecutive year, the Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville has been highly ranked in a prestigious national survey; and

WHEREAS, the Augusta Medical Center is a non-profit, 255-bed, primary care facility that, in 2001, had more than 12,000 admissions, 54,000 inpatient days, 50,000 emergency visits, and 250,000 outpatient visits; and

WHEREAS, the Augusta Medical Center is staffed by more than 225 full-time physicians, 1,900 employees, and 700 volunteers; and

WHEREAS, in 2002 the Augusta Medical Center was ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the country in geriatric care (45th), digestive disorder care (44th), and hormonal disorder care (43rd); and

WHEREAS, the survey and ranking, conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago for U.S. News and World Report magazine, is based on an eight-criteria scale; and

WHEREAS, the criteria, including such factors as mortality rates, staffing ratios, and technology services, were applied to more than 6,000 hospitals nationwide, of which 205 were ranked in different medical specialties; and

WHEREAS, the Augusta Medical Center was one of three Virginia hospitals to be ranked in the top 50 nationwide, and one of only two Virginia hospitals ranked in more than one specialty; and

WHEREAS, the high rankings of the Augusta Medical Center can be attributed to increased diagnostic capabilities and the recruitment of highly skilled physicians who bring with them the latest medical techniques and technologies; and

WHEREAS, the high national ranking of the Augusta Medical Center reflects well on the hundreds of professionals and volunteers who continue to work to provide the citizens of Augusta County with the finest health care available; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Augusta Medical Center on its most recent national recognition; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dick Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the Augusta Medical Center, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations on the hospital's notable achievements.
