020687928Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 24.2-667.1 as follows:
§ 24.2-667.1. Announcement of results in Presidential elections; penalty.
The officers of election, general registrars, local electoral board members, State Board of Elections, and their staffs, and persons present when the vote is ascertained pursuant to § 24.2-655, shall make no public announcement of the precinct results in a Presidential election until the polls have closed throughout the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia. The State Board of Elections shall promulgate instructions to implement the provisions of this section. Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor.
[ 2. That the provisions of this act shall expire on July 1, 2004, unless two-thirds of the states east of the Mississippi River have enacted the restriction regarding the announcement of precinct results set forth in the first enactment. ]
