2002 SESSION
SB 52 Planning time for elementary school teachers.
Introduced by: John S. Edwards | all patrons ... notes | add to my profiles
SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:
Planning time for elementary school teachers. Requires school boards to ensure that all elementary school teachers have a period of unencumbered planning time during each regular student school day.
Currently, school boards are to "seek to ensure" that elementary school teachers have three hours of planning time each week. Pursuant to the Standards of Accreditation, middle school teachers with more than 25 class periods per week must have "one period per day unencumbered of any teaching or supervisory duties," and all full-time secondary school classroom teachers receive "one class period each day, unencumbered by supervisory or teaching duties... for instructional planning time." The SOA are silent as to planning time for elementary school teachers; however, schools are to report "the extent to which an unencumbered lunch is provided for all classroom teachers" (8 VAC 20-131-240 D, E, G).
