SUMMARY AS PASSED:

Posting of certain statement. Requires all school boards to post the statement, "In God We Trust, the national motto, enacted by Congress in 1956,” prominently and in a conspicuous place, in each of their schools for all students to read. "In God We Trust," is presently codified as the national motto of the United States pursuant to 36 U.S.C. § 186 (1999). This bill is identical to SB 608.

SUMMARY AS PASSED HOUSE:

Posting of certain statement. Requires all school boards to post the national motto, "In God We Trust," prominently, and in a conspicuous place, in each of their schools for all students to read. "In God We Trust," is the national motto of the United States pursuant to 36 U.S.C. § 186 (1999). In addition, the Office of the Attorney General is required to intervene on behalf of local school boards and to provide legal defense of this provision. An enactment clause authorizes local school boards to accept contributions in cash or in-kind from any person (defined to include individuals, companies, organizations, and other legal entities) to defray the costs of implementing this provision.
