2002 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Wachovia Cup, sponsored by the Virginia High School League and Wachovia Bank, has for 12 years honored individual high schools in Virginia for their academic and athletic achievements; and
WHEREAS, in the athletic Wachovia Cup, of which three are awarded annually, one for each of the Virginia High School League's three size classifications, points are awarded for sanctioned state competition; and
WHEREAS, the Wachovia Cup is the Virginia High School League's premier award, recognizing year-long excellence in athletic competition; and
WHEREAS, with four state championships, Jamestown High School of Williamsburg, runner-up in the Wachovia Cup in each of the last three years, easily won the 2001 Wachovia Cup in the Group AA classification; and
WHEREAS, with 355 points, Jamestown High School outdistanced second-place Blacksburg High School (287.5) and third-place Handley High School (285.5) to win its first Wachovia Cup; and
WHEREAS, Jamestown High School athletic teams won four state championships in 2000-2001 and have won 10 in their four years of existence; and
WHEREAS, the Jamestown Eagles boys' and girls' swimming teams both won state titles; the girls' tennis team captured its second consecutive state championship; and the boys' soccer team defeated three-time defending champion Blacksburg High School to win its first state crown; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Jamestown High School athletic program is a tribute to the talent and hard work of the athletes, the leadership of the coaching staff, and the support of the Jamestown High School administration, faculty, and students; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the students of Jamestown High School of Williamsburg on winning the coveted Wachovia Cup; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Athletic Director Tom Dolan as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation for the sustained athletic excellence of the students of Jamestown High School of Williamsburg.
