2002 SESSION
WHEREAS, on October 15, 2001, the United States Army announced its selection of Fort Belvoir as the site for the National Museum of the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, throughout its history, the United States Army has collected historical artifacts of great value to soldiers, veterans, military historians, and citizens; and
WHEREAS, lacking a centralized museum dedicated to preserving and displaying its heritage, the United States Army has searched for a suitable site for its national museum; and
WHEREAS, Fort Belvoir, with its wealth of historic attractions nearby and its proximity to the nation's capitol, was selected after nearly two decades of study; and
WHEREAS, slated to open in 2009, the National Museum of the United States Army will complement Virginia's historic attractions, including nearby Mount Vernon, the planned National Air and Space Museum annex at Dulles Airport, and the Marine Corps National Heritage Center at Quantico; and
WHEREAS, the National Museum of the United States Army, a welcome addition to Virginia's numerous historic sites, will attract thousands of visitors annually and will enhance the future growth and economic development of Fairfax and Prince William Counties; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby officially welcome the National Museum of the United States Army to the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Army so that he may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia.
