SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 238
Celebrating the life of Katharine Graham.

WHEREAS, Katharine Graham, the president of The Washington Post Company and one of the nation's most influential and respected women, died on July 17, 2001; and

WHEREAS, Katharine Graham took over the reins of the Washington Post following the death of her husband, Philip L. Graham, in 1963, and over the course of nearly four decades built the Post into one of the nation's most successful and influential newspapers; and

WHEREAS, Katharine Graham was widely admired for her determined leadership of the Post during the crises caused by the publication of the Pentagon Papers, the Watergate investigations, and the turmoil in Washington, D.C., following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King; and

WHEREAS, at a time when few women led major corporations, Katharine Graham took control of The Washington Post Company and led it to unprecedented success and national recognition; and

WHEREAS, a widow raising four children while running one of the nation's most important newspapers, Katharine Graham was noted for her efforts to encourage women to take on greater responsibility at the Post; and

WHEREAS, a friend and confidante to many of the most prominent leaders and statesmen of the day, Katharine Graham retained her innate humility and kindness in dealing with people from all walks of life; and

WHEREAS, among her more notable accomplishments, Katharine Graham created the Distinguished Educational Leadership and Agnes Meyer awards to honor teachers and school principals throughout the Washington metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, the author of a Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiography, Katharine Graham led a life of pioneering accomplishment and acclaim, while maintaining a personal reputation for courage, honor, integrity, and humility; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the passing of an extraordinary American, Katharine Graham; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Katharine Graham as an expression of the great respect in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
