2002 SESSION
WHEREAS, the wellness and good health of Virginia's 3.7 million women and girls are of paramount importance to the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, women and girls' wellness and good health contribute greatly to the economic and social vitality of Virginia's families and businesses and the growth of Virginia's economy; and
WHEREAS, many women and girls in the Commonwealth lack awareness of basic information about their health and well-being and are unaware of the diverse medical and non-medical issues that affect them; and
WHEREAS, various days, weeks, and months have been designated to focus attention of specific diseases, conditions, and injuries that affect women and girls, but no such time has been established to publicize, promote, and celebrate wellness for women and girls; and
WHEREAS, hundreds of organizations in Virginia that offer programs and services that affect the health and well-being of women and girls are cooperating, through the Women's Health Virginia Network, to inaugurate Women and Girls' Wellness Month in Virginia in April 2002; and
WHEREAS, during the month of April, in 2002 and in subsequent years, educational, recreational, and other events will be held in communities throughout the Commonwealth to raise awareness of issues concerning the wellness of women and girls and to highlight the variety of programs, services, and organizations that together address the needs of women and girls in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Women and Girls' Wellness Month activities will increase knowledge about wellness in a comprehensive way and enhance understanding by women and girls about improving their health and well-being; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate the month of April, in 2002 and in each succeeding year, as Women and Girls' Wellness Month in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Women's Health Virginia Network as an expression of the General Assembly's support for this worthwhile initiative on behalf of the women and girls of the Commonwealth.
