2002 SESSION
WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, terrorists launched an inexcusable attack on the United States, causing great destruction and horrible human suffering in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, the attack had a devastating effect in Virginia, home of the Pentagon and of many of the personnel, military and civilian, who served there; and
WHEREAS, among the victims of the Pentagon attack was Captain Jack D. Punches, Jr., of Clifton, a retired Navy captain and deputy head of the Navy's interagency support branch at the Pentagon; and
WHEREAS, a native of Illinois, Captain Punches earned his bachelor's degree from Missouri University and earned degrees in strategic studies from the Naval War College and in international relations from Salve Regina University, both in Newport, Rhode Island; and
WHEREAS, designated a naval aviator in 1975, Captain Punches was assigned to the Jacksonville, Florida, Naval Air Station and was an executive officer of the Lifting Eagles in the fleet-logistics support squadron in Sigonella, Sicily; and
WHEREAS, Captain Punches assumed command of the squadron and was deployed to Jedda, Saudi Arabia, to support Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm; and
WHEREAS, Captain Punches retired from the Navy in 2000 and returned as a civilian employee at the Pentagon, serving as deputy head of the interagency support branch; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Captain Jack D. Punches, Jr., a victim of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Captain Jack D. Punches, Jr., as an expression of the heartfelt condolences of the General Assembly of Virginia.
