WHEREAS, on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the United States was the target of a terrorist attack that killed, maimed, and otherwise injured thousands of American citizens and visitors from other nations in New York City, Pennsylvania, and Arlington, Virginia, at the Pentagon; and

WHEREAS, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Urban Search and Rescue Team–Virginia Task Force II deployed within 24 hours to Northern Virginia to provide emergency assistance and support to on-scene emergency agencies at the Pentagon, headquarters for the United States Department of Defense; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Task Force II carried out the missions of securing the structural stability of the Pentagon, searching for survivors, and recovering the remains of victims; and

WHEREAS, the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team–Virginia Task Force II consists of 77 members, which include fire and police personnel from the Cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Newport News, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg, the Counties of James City and York, and Naval Regional Fire Rescue Hampton Roads, Sewell's Point District; and

WHEREAS, the team also included other city and county employees, volunteer civilians, and military personnel, including structural engineers, hazardous materials specialists, medical professionals, and dog handlers with their search and rescue canines, and included the following: Bradley D. WHEREAS, these members of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team–Virginia Task Force II carried out their assigned tasks with consistent fervor, safety, and professionalism; and

WHEREAS, the members of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team–Virginia Task Force II returned to their homes on Wednesday, September 19, 2001; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby recognize the Norfolk members of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team–Virginia Task Force II for their outstanding response in the immediate aftermath of the tragic terrorist attack on the Pentagon and for their heroism; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the City of Norfolk as an expression of the high esteem in which the Norfolk members of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team–Virginia Task Force II are held by the members of the General Assembly and the people of Virginia.
