WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, terrorists launched an inexcusable attack on the United States, causing great destruction and horrible human suffering in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, the attack had a devastating effect in Virginia, home of the Pentagon and of many of the personnel, military and civilian, who served there; and
WHEREAS, among the victims of the Pentagon attack was Lieutenant General Timothy L. Maude of Fort Meyer, the highest-ranking casualty of the September 11 attack; and
WHEREAS, a native of Indianapolis, General Maude was a graduate of Ball State University and a veteran of service in Vietnam, where he earned a bronze star; and
WHEREAS, an expert in personnel matters, General Maude's duties took him to Germany, South Korea, and the United States; and
WHEREAS, General Maude was the U.S. Army's deputy chief of staff for personnel, a position to which he was appointed in May 2000; and
WHEREAS, the man in charge of recruitment for the Army, General Maude spearheaded the "Army of One" campaign and reversed years of decline in Army recruitment; and
WHEREAS, on September 4, 2001, the Army announced that it had met its recruiting goals for active-duty personnel ahead of schedule and would soon meet the recruiting goals for the Army Reserve and the Army National Guard, a tribute to the skill, dedication, and professionalism of Lieutenant General Timothy L. Maude; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Lieutenant General Timothy L. Maude, a victim of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant General Timothy L. Maude as an expression of the heartfelt condolences of the General Assembly of Virginia.
