WHEREAS, Johnny Micheal Spann, the son of Johnny Wayne Spann and Loretta Gail Spann, was born on March 1, 1969, in Winfield, Alabama; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Micheal Spann graduated from Winfield High School in Winfield, Alabama, in 1987; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Micheal Spann attended Auburn University before joining the United States Marine Corps on December 16, 1991; and
WHEREAS, after serving with the Marines for nearly eight years, Johnny Micheal Spann was honorably discharged from active duty, with the rank of captain, on May 28, 1999; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Micheal Spann joined the Central Intelligence Agency in June 1999, where he met his future wife, Shannon Michelle Joy, who was a member of his CIA class; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Micheal and Shannon Michelle Spann were married and resided in Manassas Park; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Micheal Spann was the father of Alison Victoria Spann, age nine, Emily Elizabeth Spann, age four, and Jacob Micheal Spann, age six months; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Micheal Spann's highest priorities were to serve God, his family, and his country; and
WHEREAS, on November 25, 2001, while serving with the CIA in Afghanistan, Johnny Micheal Spann made the supreme sacrifice and became the first American combat casualty in the Afghanistan conflict; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commemorate the life of Johnny Micheal Spann; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Johnny Micheal Spann's widow, Shannon Michelle Spann, and his parents, Johnny Wayne and Loretta Gail Spann, as an expression of the sincere condolences of the General Assembly of Virginia.
