026909406WHEREAS, since 1975, Vietnamese refugees have been coming to Virginia and making the Commonwealth their home; and
WHEREAS, in the past 27 years, the Vietnamese-American community has grown and has contributed to the prosperity of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Americans of Vietnamese heritage continue to be a vital part of the Commonwealth's rich diversity by contributing significantly to all aspects of daily life, from education to communications, from medicine to commerce and trade, and from public service to high technology; and
WHEREAS, as Americans, Vietnamese refugees have adapted to the American way of life while preserving the richness of their cultural heritage, which, with its strong traditions, serves as a positive influence on the lives of many; and
WHEREAS, Vietnamese-Americans were among the victims of the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, and the Vietnamese-American community has donated nearly $100,000 to the Red Cross for the Victim Relief Fund; and
WHEREAS, while enjoying freedom and democracy in the United States, Vietnamese-Americans have resolved to preserve human rights and honor the sacrifice of the many who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom, liberty, and justice; and
WHEREAS, the Republic of South Vietnam, an ally with whom the United States fought side-by-side, fell on April 30, 1975; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate April 30, in 2002 and in each succeeding year, as National Vietnamese Remembrance Day in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly urge Virginians to observe this day by reflecting on the events of April 30, 1975, and by celebrating the notable achievements and ongoing contributions of Virginia's vibrant Vietnamese-American community.
