On the death of Dr. Orrin W. Clifton.

WHEREAS, Dr. Orrin W. Clifton, a prominent Roanoke orthodontist who was active in a wide range of community-service organizations, died on January 10, 2001; and

WHEREAS, a native of Spencer, Virginia, Orrin Clifton graduated from Drewry Mason High School and Wake Forest University before serving as an officer in the U.S. Air Force as a deputy crew commander in the Atlas Missile program; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry and its postgraduate orthodontic program, Dr. Clifton was a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and practiced orthodontia in Roanoke for 28 years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Clifton was a member of and held leadership positions in numerous professional organizations, including the Virginia Association of Orthodontics, the Roanoke Valley Dental Society, the American Association of Orthodontics, and the Southern Association of Orthodontics, which recognized him with its 1998 Citizenship Award; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Clifton published articles in such professional journals as the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics and the American Journal of Orthodontics; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Clifton served as president of the West End Center for Youth from 1998–2000 and was a tutor there for five years, was on the board of the United Way, and was a member of the Community Based Health Care Coalition; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Clifton was recently given the Martin Luther King, Jr., Hero Award by the Community School; and

WHEREAS, a skilled and talented professional, a dedicated community servant, and a loving family man, Dr. Orrin W. Clifton will be sorely missed by the Roanoke community he served so well; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of an exceptional citizen of Roanoke, Orrin W. Clifton; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Orrin W. Clifton as an expression of the esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
