WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, terrorists launched a violent attack on the United States, causing great destruction and horrible human suffering in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, the attack had a devastating effect in Virginia, home of the Pentagon and of many of the personnel, military and civilian, who served there; and

WHEREAS, the Salvation Army was one of the first relief organizations to swing into action in the aftermath of the attacks; and

WHEREAS, at Ground Zero in New York, more than 300 Salvation Army volunteers worked around the clock to provide assistance and comfort to the thousands of fire and rescue workers at the site; and

WHEREAS, the Salvation Army volunteers manned canteens, supplied food and drink, and offered counseling to the victims, their families, and the rescue personnel at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon; and

WHEREAS, within days of the attacks, the Salvation Army had established a family crisis center near Ground Zero, and its volunteers continued to serve thousands of meals to firefighters and emergency medical personnel and to offer counseling to emergency workers and victims' families; and

WHEREAS, in addition to assisting victims of the attacks, the Salvation Army helped more than 50,000 travelers stranded by the grounding of air traffic in the immediate aftermath of the attacks; and

WHEREAS, the Salvation Army has continued to play a vital role in the recovery efforts resulting from the September 11 attacks, and its good work has provided assistance and comfort to victims, their families, and the thousands of individuals involved in rescue and recovery operations; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates commend the Salvation Army for its prompt, sensitive, generous, and effective response to the tragedy of September 11, 2001; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the Salvation Army as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration and gratitude for the organization's exceptional work on behalf of the victims of the September 11 attacks.
