WHEREAS, Daniel Pearl, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal assigned to Pakistan, was kidnapped on January 23, 2002, and brutally murdered shortly thereafter; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Pearl was born in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1963, graduated from Stanford University with a degree in communications, and began his career in journalism with the Berkshire Eagle in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in 1988; and
WHEREAS, according to one of his former editors, Clarence Vanto, "The way that he interviewed people and the way he wrote stories made it clear that he was destined for the big leagues"; and
WHEREAS, in 1990 the Wall Street Journal hired Daniel Pearl, who had worked in the Atlanta, Washington, London, and Paris bureaus before moving to Bombay, India, to cover the tensions between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir region; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Pearl was working on a story about the Islamic militant underground when he was kidnapped on January 23, 2002, in Karachi, Pakistan; and
WHEREAS, according to Wall Street Journal Managing Editor Paul Steiger, "This man lives for three things. He lives for covering stories accurately. He lives for his wife--they have a wonderful relationship--and he lives for his unborn child"; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Pearl has made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure a free and open government; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the death of a brave and honorable protector of America's freedom, Daniel Pearl; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Daniel Pearl as an expression of the esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
