Commending the William King Regional Arts Center.

WHEREAS, on March 23, 2002, the William King Regional Arts Center celebrates its 10th anniversary of service to the citizens and schoolchildren of Southwest Virginia; and

WHEREAS, established in 1992 at the renovated and historic William King High School in Washington County, the William King Regional Arts Center serves the citizens of all 11 counties of far Southwest Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the William King Regional Arts Center, the region's premier visual arts facility with three galleries, a library, and other spaces, is the result of a successful partnership of state and local funding; and

WHEREAS, the William King Regional Arts Center is a museum partner of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and is closely associated with the Southwest Virginia Public Education Consortium; and

WHEREAS, in addition to its annual exhibition schedule of 10–12 changing exhibits, the William King Regional Arts Center offers a visual arts education program for school audiences, both on-site and outreach, and a visual arts program for public audiences; and

WHEREAS, the William King Regional Arts Center's visual arts education program benefits students in public schools in 14 school districts and includes such programs as Art Express, designed for third grade students and attended by nearly 3,000 students and teachers from across the region; and

WHEREAS, the centerpiece of the William King Regional Arts Center's off-site programming is VanGogh Outreach, an arts education program that reaches 223 classes of second graders in 85 elementary schools in 14 public school districts; and

WHEREAS, in its relatively short history, the William King Regional Arts Center has been honored with a Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Alliance for Arts Education and was selected in 1993 for participation in the National Endowment for the Arts Advancement program; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the William King Regional Arts Center on the occasion of its 10th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Betsy K. White, director of the William King Regional Arts Center, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations on the success of this vital part of the cultural life of Southwest Virginia.
