WHEREAS, Joseph Hornbarger, the former Mayor of Christiansburg who served the town in various capacities for more than 40 years, died on February 24, 2002; and

WHEREAS, a native of Vicker Switch, Joseph Hornbarger rode his horse into Christiansburg to attend school, and in 1924, he was captain of the high school football team; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from the College of William and Mary, Joseph Hornbarger worked in West Virginia, but soon returned to Christiansburg, where he operated hardware stores for more than 30 years; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Hornbarger, a volunteer firefighter and a member of the Virginia National Guard, was elected to the first of his two terms on the Christiansburg Town Council in 1948; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the hardware business in 1964, Joseph Hornbarger became Christiansburg's treasurer, serving in that position until 1980, when he was asked to fill the unexpired term of Mayor C. Fred Blount, who died in October of that year; and

WHEREAS, after completing the two years of the unexpired term, Joseph Hornbarger was elected to serve another term as Mayor of Christiansburg before finally retiring in 1986; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Hornbarger was a longtime member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Christiansburg/Blacksburg Rotary Club; and

WHEREAS, over a long and fruitful life, Joseph Hornbarger served the citizens of Christiansburg with selfless dedication, compassion, and diligence; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby mourn the passing of an outstanding citizen of Christiansburg, Joseph Hornbarger; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph Hornbarger as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
