Commending Highland Springs High School.

WHEREAS, Highland Springs High School, in eastern Henrico County, was the most improved school in the Richmond metropolitan area on the Standards of Learning tests in 2001; and

WHEREAS, Highland Springs High School was one of the most improved high schools in the Commonwealth and was recognized by the Department of Education and the Virginia Association of School Superintendents as a Best Practice Site in 1999 and 2000; and

WHEREAS, due to the diligent efforts of the faculty and administration of Highland Springs High School, the school's students improved in all areas of the Standards of Learning--English, mathematics, social studies, and science; and

WHEREAS, over a four-year period, the test scores for students at Highland Springs High School have improved by 28.6 percent in English, 55.11 percent in mathematics, 46.89 percent in social studies, and 19.63 percent in science; and

WHEREAS, from the status of "Accredited with Warning," Highland Springs High School has advanced to "Provisionally Accredited" and is short of "Fully Accredited" by a scant seven points; and

WHEREAS, the faculty at Highland Springs High School works hard to prepare students for the Standards of Learning tests, using student performance data, tutoring, innovative instructional strategies and methods, technology, and resources available from Henrico County and the Department of Education; and

WHEREAS, most important, the teachers at Highland Springs High School believe in the abilities of their students with no student allowed to think he is unable to succeed; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the students, faculty, and administration of Highland Springs High School for the students' outstanding performance on the Standards of Learning tests; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. William R. Hite, principal of Highland Springs High School, as an expression of the congratulations and best wishes of the General Assembly.
