WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, terrorists launched an inexcusable attack on the United States, causing great destruction and horrible human suffering in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, the attack had a devastating effect in Virginia, home of the Pentagon and of many of the personnel, military and civilian, who served there; and
WHEREAS, among the victims of the Pentagon attack was Lieutenant Commander Robert R. Elseth of Burke, a 14-year veteran of service in the U.S. Navy who was assigned to the Naval Command Center at the Pentagon; and
WHEREAS, a 1987 graduate of Ohio State University, Lieutenant Commander Elseth was on active duty for 10 years, serving aboard the USS Claude V. Ricketts, the USS Donald B. Beary, and the USS John Rodgers; and
WHEREAS, while serving as an instructor at the Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island, Lieutenant Commander Elseth was recognized as Junior Officer of the Year for Newport Naval Ashore Commands; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Commander Elseth continued to serve as an officer in the Naval Reserve in a number of units, including his most recent service at the Naval Command Center; and
WHEREAS, in Burke, Lieutenant Commander Elseth was active in his church as a Sunday school teacher, coached girls' soccer, and was a founding partner of Delta Resources, Inc., a defense consulting firm; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Lieutenant Commander Robert R. Elseth, a victim of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant Commander Robert R. Elseth as an expression of the heartfelt condolences of the General Assembly of Virginia.
