WHEREAS, David H. Horne, the founder and director of the Virginia Hunters for the Hungry program, died on February 14, 2002; and

WHEREAS, a native of Rhode Island and a 1974 graduate of Washington and Lee University, David Horne worked for the last 19 years of his life to provide food for people in need; and

WHEREAS, before founding Hunters for the Hungry in 1991, David Horne was the general manager of the Society of St. Andrew, a nationwide nonprofit produce salvage organization; and

WHEREAS, Hunters for the Hungry works with hunters and local food banks to provide food for Virginia's needy citizens; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of David Horne, Hunters for the Hungry provided 33,000 pounds of venison in its first year, a total that increased to more than 233,000 pounds in 2001; and

WHEREAS, since its inception, Hunters for the Hungry has grown into the largest effort of its kind in the country, providing more than 5.6 million servings of venison since its founding by David Horne; and

WHEREAS, David Horne worked with a wide variety of organizations—local food banks and nonprofit charitable groups, state agencies such as the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Department of Health, and numerous local civic groups and churches—to provide the means to receive, process, and deliver tens of thousands of pounds of venison annually; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions, David Horne was honored repeatedly by, among others, the Virginia Chapter of the National Turkey Federation, the Virginia Wildlife Federation, and the Virginia Deer Hunters Association; and

WHEREAS, David Horne devoted most of his too-short life to helping others, and the success of the organization he founded and nurtured is his most valuable and lasting legacy; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, David H. Horne; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of David H. Horne as an expression of the General Assembly's deep and abiding respect for his memory.
