WHEREAS, the Statler Brothers, the most award-winning group in country music history, have announced their intention to retire from touring at the end of 2002; and

WHEREAS, for nearly 40 years, the Statler Brothers, based in Staunton, have played for millions of fans in sold-out venues across the country; and

WHEREAS, over their outstanding career, the Statler Brothers have won three Grammy Awards, nine Country Music Association Awards, 48 Music City News Awards, and 32 song-writing awards; and

WHEREAS, for four decades, the Statler Brothers have produced hit records and have compiled 20 gold, platinum, double-platinum, and triple-platinum albums among their more than 60 career albums; and

WHEREAS, throughout the 1990s, the Statler Brothers hosted TNN's highest rated program for seven consecutive seasons; and

WHEREAS, in a Harris poll in the mid-1990s, Americans were asked to name their favorite singers, and the Statler Brothers ranked second, behind only the legendary Frank Sinatra; and

WHEREAS, from their beginning in the 1960s, when they "Got Paid by Cash," to the 21st century, the Statler Brothers have compiled an unparalleled record of success, have consistently entertained and delighted their millions of fans, and have represented the Commonwealth with their unique musical talents around the world; and

WHEREAS, the Statler Brothers—Harold Reid, Phil Balsley, Jimmy Fortune, and Don Reid—will play their last concert on November 1, 2002; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Statler Brothers on the completion of an extraordinary 40-year career of touring; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Statler Brothers as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for their peerless accomplishments.
