Celebrating the life of Edmund Waller Hening, Jr.

WHEREAS, Edmund Waller Hening, Jr., a native and lifelong resident of Richmond, died on April 6, 2000; and

WHEREAS, Edmund Waller Hening, Jr., was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; and

WHEREAS, a prominent attorney, circuit court judge, and military veteran, Edmund Waller Hening, Jr., spent his life in the service of others; and

WHEREAS, Edmund Waller Hening, Jr., attended the City of Richmond public schools before earning his undergraduate and L.L.B. degrees from the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, in a time of national emergency, Edmund Waller Hening, Jr., temporarily set aside his personal interests, served with honor and distinction in the United States Navy during the Second World War on the staff of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, and attained the rank of lieutenant; and

WHEREAS, upon completion of his military service, Edmund Waller Hening, Jr., returned to Richmond and practiced law, providing help, advice, and wise counsel to his fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, Edmund Waller Hening, Jr., was appointed Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney in 1953, was elected to the position in 1954, and was appointed to the Henrico County Circuit Court in 1957, where he served as a judge for over 26 years; and

WHEREAS, Judge Hening built an enviable reputation for judicial excellence, and his term on the bench was characterized by his integrity, fairness, professionalism, compassion, and knowledge and respect for the law; and

WHEREAS, Edmund Waller Hening, Jr., was also active in the Glenbrooke Hills Civic Association, Richmond Junior Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post 316, Kanawha Recreation Association, and First Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon and elder; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Henrico County and the Commonwealth have lost a prominent citizen and true friend with a servant's soul; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an exceptional citizen of the Commonwealth, Edmund Waller Hening, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Edmund Waller Hening, Jr., as an expression of the esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
