2002 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Virginia War Memorial, located on a prominent point overlooking the James River in Richmond, is the only state war memorial that honors the veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia War Memorial Foundation has set a goal of teaching patriotism by developing educational programs to preserve the history of participation by Virginians in our nation's wars; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia War Memorial Foundation has created the program, Virginians at War: Historic Interviews, to record a history of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf that is brought to life through interviews with Virginia veterans who were there; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia War Memorial Foundation is conducting interviews statewide and editing these unforgettable, irreplaceable eyewitness accounts into educational units that are correlated to the Standards of Learning in order to help students understand the realities of war and the sacrifices made to ensure the freedom they enjoy today; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia War Memorial Foundation intends to raise $9.5 million to complete its educational programs with the goal of creating the best educational resource to teach patriotism and to make these programs available to schools across the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, General William C. Westmoreland has said of the Virginia War Memorial, "Indeed, this uniquely impressive monument . . . is proof that the great State of Virginia has maintained its traditional sense of values--values that have contributed in a major way to the character and success of the United States of America"; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Virginia War Memorial Foundation for its resolute pursuit of the worthy goals of preserving history, raising public awareness of the sacrifices of Virginia's veterans, and developing programs to educate Virginians concerning the cost of maintaining our nation's freedom; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly urge Virginians, and all Americans, to visit the Virginia War Memorial and to support the Virginia War Memorial Foundation and its worthy and appropriate activities; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Board of Trustees of the Virginia War Memorial Foundation as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation for its efforts to preserve and enhance Virginia's heritage.
