028285776WHEREAS, established in 1972, WNVT (now part of the MHz Networks) has for 30 years showcased local music and entertainment as well as national and international music, films, sports, and technology; and
WHEREAS, MHz and MHz2 are two of only a handful of independent public television stations in the country, and MHz2, which started life as WNVT, can be seen throughout the Washington metropolitan area; and
WHEREAS, formerly Instructional Television ITV, MHzLEARN has been a vital part of WNVT/MHz2 since 1974, providing instructional services to Northern Virginia's educational community; and
WHEREAS, aligned with national standards and the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) requirements, MHzLEARN's instructional programming and the MHzLEARN series are designed specifically for classroom use; and
WHEREAS, airing Monday through Friday throughout the school year, MHzLEARN provides specialized services to more than 320,000 students and 25,000 teachers in 500 schools in 12 school districts in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, commissioned by the General Assembly to help students and teachers meet SOL requirements, MHzLEARN is a member of the Regional Schools Contracting and Planning Committee, along with school district representatives and a representative from the Department of Education; and
WHEREAS, this committee ensures that the MHzLEARN instructional series are well suited to the needs of teachers and students in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, in addition to MHzLEARN, MHz2 has a long-standing commitment to covering public affairs in Virginia, including several broadcasts covering the deliberations of the General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, for 30 years, WNVT/MHz2 has entertained, informed, and educated the citizens of Northern Virginia and, with sister station MHz, is expanding its horizons and its offerings as it enters its fourth decade; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend WNVT/MHz2 on the occasion of its 30th anniversary of service to the citizens of the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to MHz2 as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes for continued success.
