WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, terrorists launched a violent attack on the United States, causing great destruction and horrible human suffering in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, the attack had a devastating effect in Virginia, home of the Pentagon and of many of the personnel, military and civilian, who served there; and

WHEREAS, among the victims of the Pentagon attack was Lieutenant Eric Allen Cranford, a Navy officer assigned to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations; and

WHEREAS, a native of Drexel, North Carolina, Eric Cranford received his Navy commission from the Reserve Officers Training Corps at the University of North Carolina in 1992; and

WHEREAS, following graduation, Eric Cranford went to naval aviation school and was trained as a helicopter aviator in Texas and Florida; and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Cranford joined a helicopter anti-submarine squadron in 1995 and served at sea on the cruiser USS Gettysburg, followed by tours on the USS McInerney and the USS Carr, both guided missile frigates; and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Cranford had been assigned to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon since April 1999; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the loss of Lieutenant Eric Allen Cranford, a victim of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant Eric Allen Cranford as an expression of the heartfelt condolences of the General Assembly of Virginia.
