On the death of Dr. Edward Ayers Dannelly III.

WHEREAS, Dr. Edward Ayers Dannelly III of Independence, a skilled and popular orthopedist who established the first orthopedic surgery practice in Galax, died on January 1, 2002; and

WHEREAS, a native of Alexandria, Edward Dannelly, a graduate of Davidson College and the University of Alabama Medical School, completed a general surgery internship and a four-year orthopedic residency at the Medical University of South Carolina; and

WHEREAS, in 1979 Dr. Dannelly established the first orthopedic surgery practice in Galax and served the citizens of Galax and Carroll and Grayson Counties with diligence and professionalism until his retirement in 2000; and

WHEREAS, a friendly and caring physician, Dr. Dannelly was widely known for his interest in physical fitness and for his extensive involvement with high school athletes; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Dannelly successfully completed the Marine Corps Marathon in 1997 and 2000, and the Virginia State Parks System began construction of the Edward A. Dannelly III Fitness Complex on the New River Trail State Park in 2000 in honor of his contributions to his community; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Dannelly regularly attended area high school athletic events, lending his support and volunteering his time and medical expertise to assist injured athletes; and

WHEREAS, widely known and respected throughout the Twin Counties area for his medical abilities and his dedication to a high level of patient care, Dr. Dannelly will be missed by his family, his many former patients, and his countless friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the untimely passing of an exceptional citizen of the Commonwealth, Dr. Edward Ayers Dannelly III; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Edward Ayers Dannelly III as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Twin Counties area.
