Commending David Horne and Hunters for the Hungry.

WHEREAS, for the past 10 years, Hunters for the Hungry, a nonprofit organization formed in 1991, has worked with hunters and local food banks to provide food for Virginia's needy citizens; and

WHEREAS, Hunters for the Hungry offers obvious benefits, including using natural resources to help those in need, eliminating potential waste, involving hunters in helping those less fortunate, and controlling the deer population in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, established in the fall of 1991, Hunters for the Hungry provided 33,000 pounds of venison in its first year, a total that increased to more than 180,000 pounds in 1999; and

WHEREAS, David Horne, a 1974 graduate of Washington and Lee University, has been a vital part of Hunters for the Hungry since 1993; and

WHEREAS, David Horne works with a wide variety of organizations—local food banks and nonprofit charitable groups, state agencies such as the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Department of Health, and numerous local civic groups and churches—to provide the means to receive, process, and deliver tens of thousands of pounds of venison annually; and

WHEREAS, the steady and substantial growth of Hunters for the Hungry throughout its decade of service is the clearest indication of the success of the program in providing high-quality, protein-rich food to Virginia's most needy citizens; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend David Horne and Hunters for the Hungry on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of this worthy organization; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to David Horne as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for his exceptional contributions to the success of Hunters for the Hungry.
