HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 229
Commending Trantwood Elementary School for being named a national Blue Ribbon School.

WHEREAS, the Blue Ribbon Schools Program is sponsored by the United States Department of Education as part of the Goals 2000 program to reform elementary and secondary education in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the program identifies and awards national recognition to both public and private schools that have attained a high level of student achievement and are unusually effective in educating their students; and

WHEREAS, elementary, middle, and high schools are eligible to participate, and each state’s chief school officer nominates schools to the Department of Education for review by a panel of 100 school educators, government officials, college staff, and business and professional representatives; and

WHEREAS, Blue Ribbon Schools are chosen on the basis of leadership, teaching environment, curriculum instruction, community and parental support, and organizational vitality; and

WHEREAS, the Blue Ribbon Schools have “been recognized for a total commitment to quality education” and “are models for effective education in both the Commonwealth and across America”; and

WHEREAS, Trantwood Elementary School in Virginia Beach was recognized as a 2001 Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education, one of only three schools in the Commonwealth so honored; and

WHEREAS, the students of Trantwood Elementary School were regional and state winners of the Stock Market Game and won commendation in 1999 for leading the nation in raising funds for the United Way; and

WHEREAS, Trantwood Elementary School enjoys a strong and active PTA and encourages strong links between the school and the community; and

WHEREAS, Trantwood Elementary School, which was founded in 1963 after the merger between Princess Anne County and the City of Virginia Beach, serves approximately 630 students; and

WHEREAS, Trantwood Elementary School’s recognition by the United States Department of Education is a tribute to the talent and dedication of the teachers and administrators, the spirit and willingness to learn of the students, and the support of the parents and the Virginia Beach community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Trantwood Elementary School for being named a national Blue Ribbon School; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Patricia Slaughter, principal of Trantwood Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for this outstanding achievement and for the sustained excellence of Trantwood Elementary School.
