Commending Halifax County on its 250th anniversary.

WHEREAS, on May 10, 1752, Virginia's Colonial Assembly created Halifax County, named after the First Lord of the British Board of Trade, the Second Earl of Halifax, George Montagu Dunk; and

WHEREAS, previously part of Lunenburg County and originally encompassing the Counties of Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, and Patrick, Halifax County has throughout its history served as one of the Commonwealth's most important rural, agricultural counties; and

WHEREAS, Halifax County is the Commonwealth's second-largest tobacco-producing county; and

WHEREAS, during the American Revolution, Halifax County was the site of a key turning point in the war, when British General Cornwallis was thwarted in his attempt to trap the Colonial forces led by General Nathaniel Greene, an event that led to Cornwallis' surrender to George Washington at Yorktown; and

WHEREAS, Halifax County was also the site of the Battle of the Staunton River Bridge during the final year of the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, Halifax County was the birthplace and home of William Munford Tuck, the Governor of Virginia from 1946 to 1950; and

WHEREAS, Halifax County is home to numerous religious congregations, whose members enjoy the freedom of religion afforded all Virginians and incorporate their religious values into their family and community lives; and

WHEREAS, in recent times, Halifax County has become a leader in the transition from a rural economy to a diversified economy composed of agricultural, manufacturing, governmental, educational, and service enterprises that enhance the economic well-being of its citizens; and

WHEREAS, during the 250th anniversary year of Halifax County, the citizens of the county will have ample opportunity to reflect with pride on their county's history and look forward with anticipation to a bright and prosperous future; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Halifax County on the occasion of its 250th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Joseph N. Morgan, Halifax County Administrator, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes.
