HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 43
Commending Evelyn Daniel Chandler.

WHEREAS, Evelyn Daniel Chandler, a native of Hampton, has been active for more than 20 years in significant preservation efforts in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, born and raised in the historic Aberdeen Gardens community in Hampton, Evelyn Chandler returned to Virginia in the 1970s after traveling all over the world with her husband, Lloyd Chandler, a career military man; and

WHEREAS, moving to Isle of Wight County in 1977, Evelyn Chandler wasted little time in becoming involved in local civic affairs, and by 1983 was appointed to the county planning commission; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Chandler served as chair of the street naming committee when Isle of Wight converted to the E-911 system, and later served a term as chair of the planning commission; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Chandler became involved in historic preservation efforts when residents of her home community, Aberdeen Gardens, sought her help in preserving the unique heritage of that Hampton neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, under Evelyn Chandler's leadership, Aberdeen Gardens was registered with Virginia's Department of Historic Resources, an organization to which she was later appointed; and

WHEREAS, among her other notable efforts, Evelyn Chandler undertook the preservation and renovation of historic Boykin's Tavern in Isle of Wight County, which, until her involvement, had been slated for destruction; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Chandler led the effort to save the tavern and played a major role in raising the funds needed to restore the historic building, which was dedicated in 2000; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Chandler has served as executive director of Health and Home Support Services, Inc., as vice president of the Virginia State Conference of the NAACP, and as a member of the NAACP Life Membership Committee; and

WHEREAS, apparently inexhaustible, and despite her claims of retirement, Evelyn Chandler is currently involved with the preservation of Smith's Pharmacy, a Newport News landmark; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Evelyn Daniel Chandler for her manifold historic preservation activities in the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Evelyn Daniel Chandler as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration, gratitude and best wishes.
