HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 36
Expressing the sense of the General Assembly concerning replacement of the bridges in the Town of West Point.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, May 8, 2001
Agreed to by the Senate, May 9, 2001

WHEREAS, since May of 1999, the Commonwealth Transportation Board, the Department of Transportation and the Town of West Point have been researching several options for replacement of the bridges in the Town of West Point; and

WHEREAS, after various meetings and hearings, the Commonwealth Transportation Board and the Department of Transportation concluded that the best option would be for the downtown bridges to be replaced (Alternative B-2); and

WHEREAS, many citizens of West Point and the surrounding area favor another option: construction of a northern bypass (Alternative A); and

WHEREAS, the efforts of the Town of West Point, its citizens, and residents of the surrounding area have failed to persuade the Commonwealth Transportation Board and the Department of Transportation to reconsider its opposition to construction of the northern bypass alternative; and

WHEREAS, neither the Commonwealth Transportation Board nor the Virginia Department of Transportation have been willing to afford any opportunity for further hearings to be held concerning this matter; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That it is the sense of the General Assembly that the Commonwealth Transportation Board and the Department of Transportation revisit their decision to replace the downtown bridges in the Town of West Point, with consideration being given to construction of a northern bypass; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit copies of this resolution to the Secretary of Transportation and the Commonwealth Transportation Commissioner in order that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly in this matter.
