2001 SPECIAL SESSION I
017191872WHEREAS, on the evening of June 3, 1781, Jack Jouett, a captain of the Virginia Militia, was awakened by the sound of a large number of horsemen; and
WHEREAS, recognizing the horsemen as British Dragoons under the command of the notorious Colonel Banastre ("the Butcher") Tarleton, Jack Jouett immediately realized the danger posed to the Virginia General Assembly, meeting a scant 40 miles away in Charlottesville; and
WHEREAS, with the main road to Charlottesville blocked by the presence of British scouts, Jack Jouett raced to Charlottesville through the back woods of Virginia, arriving at Monticello to warn Governor Thomas Jefferson mere minutes ahead of the British troops; and
WHEREAS, Jack Jouett then rode on to Charlottesville to warn Patrick Henry and the rest of the General Assembly, all of whom escaped the advancing British; and
WHEREAS, while less well-known than Paul Revere's ride six years earlier, Jack Jouett's ride was longer, more hazardous, and had a much greater impact on the outcome of the American Revolution; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate June 3rd, in 2001 and in each succeeding year, as Jack Jouett Day in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly encourage Virginians to learn more of the remarkable exploits of Jack Jouett and to honor the memory of this outstanding American patriot.
